CATIA V5-6R2018: Introduction to Surface Design

1.1 Surface Definition
A surface is a non-solid, zero-thickness feature that can define a
contoured shape. Surfaces help capture the design intent of
complex shapes that are not easily defined with solid features.
Once defined, surfaces can be used as references to aid in the
creation of other features (solid and non-solid). Figure 1–1
shows an example of a single surface feature.
Figure 1–1
CATIA uses the term surface in several different contexts
depending on the functionality being discussed. A surface can
refer to any of the following:
• A non-solid feature created using the Wireframe and Surface
or Generative Shape Design workbenches, commonly
referred to as surfaces.
• A bounded face defined by a solid feature, commonly
referred to as a face.
• A reference plane (infinite flat surface), commonly referred to
as a plane.
