How Avatars Enhance eLearning Engagement

This blog is Part 9 of our PLM eLearning Design Series, where we explore different interactive features and strategies that transform static content into engaging, learner-centered experiences. This blog highlights how talking avatars can help bring training content to life and create a more human learning experience.

One of the challenges with many eLearning courses is that they can feel impersonal. Slides full of text or static screenshots may communicate information, but they often lack the sense of guidance that learners get in a live classroom.

That’s where talking Avatars can help. Avatars act as virtual guides or instructors, helping explain concepts, introduce topics, and provide helpful tips along the way. When used effectively, they give learners the sense that someone is walking them through the material rather than simply presenting information.

For example, an avatar might introduce a new PLM workflow, highlight a common mistake users make in the system, or guide learners through a step-by-step process. The avatar can appear at key points in the course to provide context, reinforce instructions, or smoothly transition between topics.

Avatars work because they add a conversational and human element to digital training. Instead of feeling like they are reading documentation, learners feel guided through the material. This can make complex systems—such as PLM environments—feel more approachable and easier to understand.

In summary, it is best practice to use talking avatars when you want to:

  • Create a more human and engaging learning experience
  • Guide learners through complex processes
  •  Reinforce important tips or transitions in the course

When used thoughtfully, avatars can turn static content into a guided learning experience — helping learners stay engaged and better connect with the material.
