This blog highlights why designing a learning path—not just a standalone course—can significantly improve learner success and software adoption.
One of the biggest challenges organizations face when implementing a new product lifecycle management (PLM) system is deciding how to organize the training. While it may seem convenient to place everything into one comprehensive course, this approach often overwhelms learners with information they may not immediately need.
Instead, effective eLearning is designed as a learning path—a series of focused, connected learning experiences that guide learners from foundational knowledge to more advanced skills. Breaking content into manageable modules helps learners build confidence while allowing them to learn at their own pace.
Learning paths also recognize that different users have different responsibilities. Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Document Managers, and Administrators often interact with the same PLM system in very different ways. Rather than requiring everyone to complete identical training, role-based learning paths allow learners to focus on the content most relevant to their daily work.
For example, a new Engineering user might begin with an introduction to the PLM interface, searching and viewing, before progressing to CAD integrations and engineering change processes. A Manufacturing Engineer, however, may also start with the introduction modules but then follow a different path that focuses on manufacturing change workflows and bill of materials (BOM). Although both learners use the same PLM system, each receives training tailored to their responsibilities, reducing unnecessary content while improving productivity.
Learning paths also support onboarding and just-in-time learning. Instead of requiring learners to complete every topic before beginning work, they can complete foundational modules first and return later to more advanced topics as their responsibilities expand. This flexibility helps improve knowledge retention while reducing cognitive overload.
In summary, it is best practice to create learning paths when:

Organizations want to support onboarding, continuous learning, and just-in-time training.
When designed thoughtfully, learning paths transform training from a single event into an ongoing learning journey—helping learners gain confidence, develop skills progressively, and successfully adopt complex PLM systems.
